The main theory of NMP is to apply manure and liquid sludge to fields under crop production.  Plants will utilize the nutrients in the waste, ensuring they do not leach through the soil profile to potentially become pollutants of groundwater.  This scheme is advantageous as it provides the crop with essential nutrients and increase organic levels in the soil.  However, this strategy must prevent high levels of nitrates and phosphorus from accumulating and potentially becoming pollutants.
